چکیده

In Mandarin, lexical tone has been found to interact with intonational influence intonation perception, the falling T4 facilitating perception of statement/question contrast most, and rising T2 least. However, in addition four citation tones T1-T4, Mandarin “neutral tone” which marks weak, non-initial syllables that do not carry a tone. The prevailing view is neutral is, fact, phonologically toneless. It unknown whether can also affect perception. it reasonable hypothesize if indeed toneless, cannot same way as do. We investigated this novel hypothesis experiment 22 speakers had determine disyllabic words were question or statement. Results show identification contours more accurate for than T2, similarly T4, regardless intrinsic derived. Furthermore, both are realized reduced pitch range at higher level questions, unlike characterized by slightly expanded level. possible facilitated changes phonetic shapes brought rather phonological interaction between intonation. importance was further tested second participants stimuli manipulated range. indicate use cues shows tone-specific differences, namely, important signaling question/statement utterances ending tone, while only perceptual cue interrogativity T2.

The neutral tone in question intonation in Mandarin

This study investigates how the neutral tone, when preceded by different full tones under different focus conditions, behaves in question intonation in Mandarin. Results indicate that 1) the preceding full/neutral tone largely determines the local F0 trajectory of the neutral tone, but the latter also gradually converges over the course of several neutral tone syllables, 2) post-focus lowering,...

On the Perception of the Neutral Tone in Taiwan Mandarin

The neutral tone in Taiwan Mandarin (TM) behaves differently from that of Standard Mandarin. Many neutral-tone syllables in TM are not reduced and have a low pitch target regardless of the preceding tone. These neutral-tone syllables are therefore acoustically similar to Tone 3 syllables in TM. This paper investigates how TM listeners distinguish Tone 3 (low tone) from the neutral tone. The res...

Context Effects on Tone and Intonation Processing in Mandarin

This study investigated how Mandarin listeners process tone and intonation when the F0 encodings of the lexical tone and intonation are in conflict or in congruency and the role context plays during these processes. Tone and intonation identification experiments were conducted within neutral vs. constraining semantic contexts. Tone identification was much easier than intonation identification i...

Perception of intonation in Mandarin Chinese.

There is a tendency across languages to use a rising pitch contour to convey question intonation and a falling pitch contour to convey a statement. In a lexical tone language such as Mandarin Chinese, rising and falling pitch contours are also used to differentiate lexical meaning. How, then, does the multiplexing of the F(0) channel affect the perception of question and statement intonation in...

Neutral Tone Realization in Tianjin Mandarin

This study examines the acoustic realization of neutral tone in Tianjin Mandarin, which shows great variability in the f0 patterns. Previous studies, mainly with impressionistic data, have proposed that the neutral tone in Tianjin Mandarin has different underlying tonal targets depending on the tonal contexts, in particular the following tone. This presents a great challenge to the crossdialect...
